Please respond
to bureau
Hi,
I am wondering if we can get a quick summary of proposed civil society
parallel WSIS events (possibly from the CSD??). This information I want to
use in terms of attracting participation from the Networks and Coalitions,
and I have been asked to discuss this at a conference in Venice and Padova
next Sunday to Wednesday . So urgent responses please. I can mention a
few that come to hand, but I have heard of others.
1) I attach information on the CRIS led event. This is now called a World
Forum on Communication Rights. December 11th
2) There is also a Parallel Conference: Digital Divide, Global Development
and Info Society. December 7-9. promoted by the International Research
Foundation for Development
3) There is the World Electronic Media Forum 9-11th also in Palexpo run by
the World Broadcasting Unions and funded by 1 million swiss francs by the
Swiss government.
4) After a weekend meeting i attended in Geneva a few weeks back, a group
of 'tactical media' and alternative media people deiced to run an event
outside of Palexpo, in at least one venue in downtown Geneva. It will
start the weekend before and will include workshops, a media hub,
discussions, music etc.
In addition, the Website http://www.wsisgeneva2003.org/events_set_proj.html
contains the stuff about ICT4d, and various Infodev and other activities.
but not all these are civil society.
Are there others planned? Is there a database I have missed? What about the
universities? etc.?
And let me come back to questions i put in an earlier e-mail - these are
directed at the CSD mainly:
I need further clarity regarding our role in Summit Events. Is the CS
Bureau proposed as the only channel by which civil society can organise
events around the Summit for civil society? We need clarification on this
- this would give us not just a coordinating role, but a gate-keeping role.
It would also be unlike anyone else, who can directly apply to the Swiss
Secretariat
And I would like to know what applications have been received to date, what
the resources/spaces available are, and how we are can certain that the
number of proposals will exceed the available space and resources available
at the Summit site. And of course, if we are the gatekeepers, what
criteria should we apply.
I have already proposed that a group be set up to look into this whole
area, but I would also to do it in the Bureau as a whole - if we actually
start discussing it.
Although the CSD is subscribed to this list, I am copying separately so
ensure the questions are noted and responded to.
Thanks
Sean
Extract from CSD note:
6. Summit Events
The basic guidelines for organizing a special event at the Summit
have been finalized by the WSIS Executive Secretariat and the
Secretariat of the host country. They will be posted on the
www.geneva2003.org website in the next days (we will make an
announcement as soon as available).
As proposals will start coming in, the CS Bureau will be requested to
examine them and make recommendations on their relevance to the
Summit Events Steering Committee. The latter is composed of the
Secretariat of the host country (Switzerland), the Canton of Geneva
and the WSIS Executive Secretariat
You will understand that the number of proposals will exceed the
available space and resources available at the Summit site. The
Summit Events Steering Committee may consider grouping or reshaping
events in order to accommodate a maximum of requests. Therefore, the
advice of the CS Bureau will be very important.
