Asunto: Re: Fellowships - SDC Decision
Dear friends
Though a bit late, I do really want to drop a note to express my elation and
full support at this happy development. (I do so also because the Asian
co-focal points--Angela and myself--have really been vocal about this since
Paris and PrepCom3, and we feel we should recognize things not only when
something is not right, but also when things are.)
I want to thank Claire, Louise and the rest of the CSD for supporting us in
this--I think the result below was indeed a result of CSD being in alignment
with the spirit of the long discussions in the CSB.
Though it is indeed "satisfying", claire, after all the intense online and
offline discussion on this, it is really not about simple satisfaction...I
would think that this is really a victory of creativity, persistence, and
opening the processes which have to be so. And to do what is right (i.e.,
gender balance).
Again, solidarity pats to all families who pushed for this, and most of all
to SDC for showing openness and flexibility in their decision.
May I suggest that a formal letter of thanks be drafted and I guess no one
will object to affixing their signatures on this... Since the latest fellows
are all from the most active women in WSIS, can we invite the Gender Caucus
and GSWG to put forward a draft next week?
Thanks
Al Alegre

Hello everyone,
We appreciate the concensus on a couple of names from the Gender Family. We
would have proposed Concepcion Garcia Ramilo as well but we have only very
recently managed to raise and confirm funds for her. So we would suggest to
the Gender Family to either put up another name or support one of ours, our
priority besides Celeste Cinco would be Raijeli Nicole.
Unfortunately, we are still proposing that only women be funded for this
round. While we recognise Monthian's key role for people with disabillities,
maybe this is something that the CSD can go back to SDC and get extra
funding for since this is a special case.
Warm regards,
Angela

Dear Louise, Liliane and Claire,
As indicated earlier, we would like to put forward five women's names from
the Asia Pacific region for fellowships under the Civil Society Facility
Fund. We have checked that for at least four of them (the first four),
obtaining visas would not be a problem. These are ranked as follows:
1) Celeste Cinco, APC (Filipina). Was very active in WSIS Asia Pacific,
Tokyo, and was part of the organising team on the gender and ICT workshop,
and active in content and drafting. Celeste will be travelling from the USA,
hence costs would probably be a little reduced in terms of airfare.
2) Raijeli Nicole, Isis International Manila (Fijian). Has been active
throughout the Prepcoms, playing major role in Content and Themes and in
advocating gender and ICT issues.
3) Ma. Victoria Balleza, Isis International Manila (Filipina). Has been
active within Media and Gender. Was also part of the organising team for the
gender and ICT workshop in WSIS Asia Pacific, Tokyo, and was active in
content and drafting.
4) Susanna George, Isis International Manila (Malaysian). Has been active on
Content and Themes and in advocating gender and ICT issues.
5) Maitreyi Doshi (Youth, India, active)
These names come from our original listing provided to the CSD.
Warm regards,
Angela
