Hello
To complement the information that I gave today to the CSB :
Please find here the URL
of the host country site, that is now difficult
to find from the ITU/WSIS site
http://www.smsitunis2005.tn
It does unfortunately speak too much for itself.
I asked that the CSB would request the executive secretariat
informations concerning the rules for UN and/or ITU
summits. I believe UN rules applies.
I had informal information that there could not be commercial
partners to a UN Summit, and the PCT group is deeply worried
of the current commercialization of a Summit, and some NGOs of the
PCT constituency are considering to write a letter to Kofi Annan
denouncing the current excessive "commercialization" of a UN summit.
I advised those that are considering to write this open letter to
wait to have further information, but there is some degree of
emergency in getting those informations.
While waiting for those information,
it is kindly suggested that the welcome page of
the host country should not feature those "partners" logos.
*even if* (which we doubt ) UN rules are authorizing this.
Since the COSMI is the preparatory body of a UN event,
it is suggested that a separate page for the COSMI should be
created where commercial companies could appear as "sponsors"
to the COSMI, in a more discrete manner, therefore
defusing some tension ( if UN rules are authorizing this, of course ).
At any rate, we would suggest, that in Geneva, in a spirit of
the involvement of the Business sector, that all commercial partnerships
and sponsorship be focused on ICT4all, and not on the
diplomatic event.
One may also the raise the issue why the "partnerships" of some NGOs
that contribute effectively to the Summit ( eg ICV volunteers ) is
not mentionned ( if partnership and sponsorship were to be allowed
for the political event ).
Best regards
Francis
