There is NOTHING better than ProTools. 

The FREE version from www.digidesign.com is SUPERB but......

Sadly Macs - starting from about 2 years ago - no longer have a SOUND INPUT!!!

It is possible to get sound in thru usb but...... Pro Tools will NOT recognise usb.

So...... if your mac is one WITH sound input then Pro Tools is the BEST choice.

I have used Pro Tools on the mac all over from China and South Africa to Kosovo and it is completely reliable and VERY easy to learn.

Another mac advantage is that people treat the machine just as an audio workstation making staff MUCH more productive...... 

The upgrade path - for staff - to video production is also very easy as all macs now come with built in video editing.
