press cutting from Macclesfield Express:

Community urged to back Radio Canalside

A NEW radio station for the Macclesfield borough which
will hit the airwaves today (Wednesday) looks set to
become an “overnight success”.
That is the confident view of co-ordinator Nick Wright
who has urged the public to embrace Canalside
Community Radio.
Broadcasting on 87.7fm from the Clarence Mill in
Bollington, the station was formed to tie-in with the
town’s festival and its trial period is due to run
until May 31.
Nick said: “We intend to have a good mix of music and
plenty of interesting chat with the usual giggle or
two.
“The main feature, of course, is the local festival,
but the whole community will be involved.
“Everybody, including myself, will work as a
volunteer, which has been the case for the last 12
months.
“Community radio is amateur, but that doesn’t mean it
has to be amateurish. We have worked so hard to
purchase and then install state-of-the-art equipment
which will help as a stepping stone for anyone wishing
to get into radio.
“I believe that with the support of the local
community, it will be an overnight success.”
He was keen to stress that the new station would not
be in competition with his former employers at Silk FM
who, as a commercial radio station, can attract a much
wider audience.
“According to Silk, I lost my job for being too
local,” Nick said. “I think that is the best
compliment anyone can have written on their CV when
they are in the process of setting up a local
community station.
“Silk’s strapline is ‘Cheshire’, while our straplines
at Canalside Community Radio will be Macclesfield,
Bollington, Poynton etc, so I do not foresee a
problem.
“The choice is very simple. Do you want national
radio, regional radio, or local community radio?
“The listener will very soon have an even bigger
choice and I hope you choose Canalside and make your
wishes known to us so that we can serve our community
to the best of our ability.”
Nick acknowledged the support he received from the two
other trustees, Eddie Walmsley and Chris Heathcote,
along with others from across the borough.
He said: “Through these columns, I would like to
express my sincere thanks to all of you who supported
me last year with well-wishes and letters and I can
personally assure you that I was very moved and
touched by it all, although a lot of my friends have
said I’ve been a bit touched for a long while!
“There have also been many individuals and local
businesses who have given a unanimous thumbs up to the
future of this project and likewise I would like to
thank them for their sponsorship and overall support.”
Anyone else who would like to help make the project a
success can contact Nick on 01625 573276, or on
576689.
