Five News to pay for user generated content

6 November

Five News is set to become the first TV news programme to guarantee
viewers cash in return for their news footage and story ideas.

Five senior controller of news and current affairs Chris Shaw will
launch the user generated content initiative "Your News" on Monday,
(13 November) guaranteeing "citizen journalists" a minimum of £100
and an on screen credit for any stories and clips which get used.
Viewers will be encouraged to send in clips, stills and stories via
the Five News website and by text.

Contributors will then be entitled to a share of the profits if the
network sells the material on to other parties.

There are also plans to create a "Your News" section in the programme
which will be dedicated exclusively to user-generated content.

Shaw, added: "Five News has always tried to pioneer and "Your News"
is in effect an editorial relaunch which acknowledges and rewards the
contributions that viewers can make to the our programmes".

Five news editor Mark Calvert said: "The best stories are those which
directly affect and feature our audience. This is our way of allowing
them to share their stories, have direct editorial input into Five
News, and be rewarded for it."
