GRANTHAM'S VERY OWN GOONS TAKE TO THE AIR
A mini series of four original Goon Show-inspired
comedy programmes will make their debut on Priory FM
on Saturday, November 18.
Written by Richard Coppin, of Westerdale Road,
Grantham, the series follows the zany misfortunes of
four cave dwellers from the Lincolnshire mountains on
their voyage of discovery.
They discover fire, flight, money and invent the wheel
but don't know what to do with this new-found
knowledge.
Richard, 49, a former Journal advertisement
representative, said: "It was something I did while I
was ill. I wrote radio plays just to relax, then
started to put together common material.
"It's not a Goon Show copy but it is their style."
Richard spoke to community radio Priory FM to see if
there was airtime available.
He said: "They snapped my hand off. I got in touch
with Grantham Dramatic Society and with three of them
and my son Peter we made the recordings."
Former BBC newsreader Paul Sproxton plays the
announcer, Lindsey Wilson the cook, Paul Dexter the
hunter, Peter Coppin the cook's idiot brother and
Richard is the chief.
The producer is Anne Bland with sound effects by Ian
Hempsall.
Called The Discovery of ... Shows it will go out at
5.03pm on Saturdays, starting November 18 as part of
Alan Matsell's Saturday Matinee.
Richard said: "It's very exciting. I'm looking forward
to it."

New community radio launches
By Steve Dancey
CASTLEDOWN Radio hit the airwaves for the first time
at noon on Saturday and celebrated the momentous event
with a big party.
The station was granted the right to broadcast on
104.7FM by regulators OFCOM in March and can now be
picked up in Tidworth, Ludgershall and the
Collingbournes and a number of smaller villages
nearby.
Former Garrison Radio presenter Baz Reilly has
tirelessly promoted the community station which is
backed by a team of volunteers drawn from the local
area who present shows, gather information, produce
features and who generally help to run the station.
"Our station is unique.
"It's unlike any other station currently
broadcasting," said Baz.
"We play music for all ages and it is run by the
community, for the community, and when listeners tune
in they will be able to hear features about themselves
and the villages they live in.
"Most of all I am pleased for our volunteers, without
whom we could not operate.
"They have worked extremely hard to provide the
internet service over the past 18 months and I know
they are as thrilled as I am that we will be
broadcasting on FM; providing a quality radio service,
which will serve the community like no other station
can."
The opening party event drew people from far and wide
and included live music from bands including, Less is
More' and Get This'.
Meanwhile Garrison Radio has moved to new premises at
Ordnance Road in Tidworth as their old site in Station
Road is no longer available due to changes at NAAFI.
In December radio fans in Tidworth will get even more
choice as Garrison FM is expected to provide an Army
radio service in Tidworth on an FM frequency.

Rocking airwaves by working the web
By Sara McCorquodale
It's tough being in an unsigned band. You know you are
the next Led Zeppelin but the problem is that no-one
else does. You want a record label to sit up and take
notice, you want people to recognise your musical
talent and most of all you want to be a genuine Dave
Grohl-style rock god. Thanks to a new radio station
broadcast over the internet from Wallington, your
dreams may not be so far-fetched.
Wastelands LIVE was launched last week on November 1
and is the brainchild of local 18-year-old Chris
Harding. As part of his Siege Buster Leisure Network
(SBL Net), the new station features indie, rock, emo
and punk music all day every day and is encouraging
new unsigned bands to get in on the act and send the
SBL Net their demo. The station will then broadcast
their tunes giving them a chance to be potentially
heard by music fans across the globe.
Although the chance of an EMI executive listening to a
Sutton radio station may seem slim, in the age of Lily
Allen-style success stories, internet broadcasting is
one of the best ways to get noticed. The north London
teenager got a record deal after the music on her
myspace page generated an unheard of amount of
interest.
Sutton youth media worker Martin Smith believes that
the station could be what many local bands need to
drum up a much-needed fanbase. He said: "I think
anything that promotes young talent in the borough is
a good thing. For bands to get noticed by record
companies they have to build up a following of people
who enjoy their music and who will go and see their
gigs. Getting involved in something like this allows
people to hear their music. Anything that gives bands
exposure will help them with getting signed."
Mr Harding, who is originally from Wallington, said:
"We are a 24-hour, seven days a week web-based radio
station which will be showcasing some of the best
rock, metal and punk acts from around the world. Best
of all, we're giving free airtime to all unsigned
bands and promoters who contact us.
"For the free airtime all a band, band member, manager
or promoter has to do is contact us, and tell us a
little about themselves like their names and the genre
of music they play. They should send us some MP3
versions of the tracks they would like to be added to
our playlist and we'll take care of the rest. There is
a maximum of two tracks per band.
"We're hoping to get some of our local unsigned bands
the recognition they deserve around the world
alongside some of the very best names in the
business."
Although the station is dedicated to helping bands get
exposure, it also needs to attract listeners. With
national radio stations such as Radio One jumping on
the new music bandwagon, why should people tune into
Wastelands LIVE?
Mr Harding said: "We're local and we're here to help
our local rock music scene. Unlike others offering a
similar service to ourselves, we conduct all of our
workings very informally and take things the way the
bands would like us to. Most tracks will normally stay
on our playlists for at least one to two months and be
played to an audience of potentially millions
internationally."

by students who will broadcast a mixture of music,
news and local information from the school.
Test transmissions will take place on 87.9 FM this
Tuesday, followed by two days of broadcasting to
listeners within a radius of about three to four miles
from the Venables Avenue school.

run from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday and
Thursday. Guests will include Pendle-based media
personality Tony Livesey and England Ladies'

presenter Keith Fletcher on to the team as trainer.
School project co-ordinator Adele Curtis said: "We are
delighted that Keith has come along to carry out the
training with the students. His background in radio
and good links for studio guests has been a real
asset. The students have really enjoyed working with
Keith and can't wait until they go live on the
airwaves!"
A team of 10 students will be responsible for the
content on PIP FM, with shifts of backroom assistants
supplying weather and travel updates and greeting

School leads the way in podcast revolution
By Candice Pearson
ONCE a blackboard was the height of technology for
teachers, then came white boards, projectors and Power
Point.
Now Malvern's Somers Park Primary School is leading
the way in the podcast revolution.
It will be the first school to make its own radio show
that pupils and parents can download onto their iPods
or MP3 players (personal music players).
The project is in the early stages at the moment, with
teachers learning how to do it, but soon families will
be listening to tracks recorded by the youngsters
themselves.
In the future, pupils could use the podcasts as
homework aids, parents could hear previews of concerts
and even one day see highlights of school matches on
video downloads, the possibilities are endless.
Headteacher Stuart Sewell, said: "It's giving the
children the opportunity to apply their creativity
skills.
"It brings together a lot of the curriculum, such as
information technology, writing skills, creativity,
drama, and speaking and listening into one area.
"It's something we can really see taking off across
the country and for that reason, for us as a
community, it's very exciting".
Somers Park came up with the idea after the Gazette
featured a story about an African exchange taking
place at the school during the summer and it was
picked up by BBC Hereford and Worcester.
Pupils and staff visited the recording studios to be
interviewed and after taking a tour of the building,
asked questions about podcasting.
Teachers Laura Edkins and Michelle Knight went on a
training course to learn about the technology and are
now helping other members of staff get to grips with
it.

Schools own radio station
Primary 7 pupils at Dundee High have become some of
the youngest broadcasters in Britain, with the launch
of the schools own radio station, RadioHigh.
The fortnightly Internet-based broadcast covers news
and events from the school, as well as featuring
interviews with local celebrities, and music composed
and performed by the pupils themselves. The project is
the brainchild of Sharon Tonner, the schools
technology specialist for primary years. Launching
our very own radio station is an enormously exciting
project for all our children, and its also a
marvellous way to learn, said Mrs Tonner. Not only
is it teaching our pupils IT skills, in everything
from constructing podcasts and composing music to
writing blogs and typing, but its also giving them
hands-on experience in clear communication,
presentation, and even deadlines. I also feel strongly
the development of oral expression is just as
important as written communication, and there is no
better medium than radio to help with that
development. The podcast has already attracted
feedback from listeners across Europe, North and South
America, Australia and Japan, and has also caught the
attention of education specialists in the UK. Weve
had a lot of interest from teachers who are keen to
set up something similar in their own schools, said
Mrs Tonner. RadioHigh can be found at
http://radiohigh-djs.blogspot.com/. As well as
podcasts of each show, the page also includes related
pupil blogs and news from the school.

Sikh radio back on air
by Kara Bradley
09/11/2006
A POPULAR Sikh radio station is back on the air in the
city for a month to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak
- one of the most important events in the Sikh
calendar.
Sangat Radio hit the airwaves last Wednesday (November
1) and will broadcast until November 28.
The community station was piloted last year in
December and over 88 per cent of Sikh and Punjabi
households in the city - around 20,000 listeners -
tuned in.
This year it will broadcast 24 hours a day from the
Ramgarhia Temple in Foleshill Road. All programmes are
produced by volunteers, and they cover a wide range of
topics and audiences.
There are programmes for children, women and families,
and shows about business, politics, education, sport,
and media.
Devotional hymns and Sikh scripture recitals will also
be broadcast.
Mehur Singh, president of the temple, said: "The
success and need for Sangat Radio can be gauged by the
overwhelming support from the community in terms of
expertise and funds. Last year, between 8pm and 10pm,
many families would switch off their TV and tune in.
"The discussion programme has an almost cult following
and we are delighted to host Sangat radio from the
temple."
Sangat Radio broadcasts on 87.7FM.
