Full Job description

General Background

GreenNet supports and promotes a progressive community, working for
peace, the environment, civil rights and social justice through the
use of communication and information technologies (ICTs). The main
themes of our work include strategic use of the Internet, CSO
capacity building, and ICT policy lobbying and advocacy work.
GreenNet provides services to around 1500 civil society organisations
and individuals, mainly in the UK.

GreenNet is a Collective, with a horizontal management structure and
is owned by the GreenNet Educational Trust, a registered charity. The
new Finance Officer will have a supervisory and financial planning
role, as well as day to day finance duties. The Finance Officer will
be responsible for overall financial management and reporting to the
company’s directors and charity trustees on financial matters.(S)he
will work closely with the Collective ensuring they receive regular
information about the financial affairs of the organisation.

This is a full time position, based in the Angel, Islington. The
salary is 21,600 pounds per annum, with the next salary review due in
April 2005.

The closing date for applications will be 1st March 2004. Interviews
will take place during the second week of March, and we expect
someone to be able to start by 19th April 2004.

Job description

The Finance Director holds the following responsibilities:

·	General day-to-day finance duties (i.e. processing payments onto
the billing system, banking, paying creditors, credit control, bank
reconciliation)

·	Production and posting of the Monthly bill run

·	Ensuring that expenditure is managed efficiently and within budget
and available resources

·	Preparation of annual budgets for approval by the Collective

·	Ensuring the Collective (and where appropriate the Trustees) are
provided with quarterly financial reports including income and
expenditure accounts with service analysis

·	Working with other staff to set targets and ensure that they are
met, working to implement GreenNet’s strategic plan

·	Ensuring the timely completion of GreenNet’s annual accounts to
trial balance and act on any recommendations arising from the auditor

·	Overseeing insurance, security, building and health and safety
issues within the office

·	Where necessary, liasing with outside bodies on behalf of GreenNet

·	Contributing to, and participating in the Collective (e.g.
attending staff meetings, occasional minute taking, events, answering
general queries)

Person specification

Essential skills and experience

·	Related degree or at least 2 years relevant experience
·	Experience with Sun systems accounts software package or equivalent
·	Experience of financial planning for a small business or NGO
·	Knowledge of the UK campaign and/or charity environment
·	Sound working knowledge of computers, the Windows operating system,
the Internet and excel spreadsheets
·	Finance skills including budgets and accounts preparation
·	Ability to manage simultaneous priorities under tight deadlines and
with limited resources
·	Ability to work under own initiative and take responsibility for
own decisions.
·	Ability to work closely as part of a small dynamic team.
·	Commitment to equal opportunities and ability to work with diverse

·	Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to
maintain close relationships with and service providers
·	Excellent word-processing and spreadsheet skills
·	Sympathy with the aims of GreenNet, in particular its commitment to

Terms and conditions

Location: The post is based at the GreenNet office in Angel,
Islington
Holidays: 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (exclusive of lunch)
Probationary period and review: There is a probationary period of six
months and a bi-annual review thereafter.

Pension: GreenNet has designated the Friends Provident stakeholder
pension scheme. This meets the government conditions for stakeholder
pensions. Members of staff should make their own arrangements to
contribute to this scheme in liaison with the GN Finance Officer.
