*Dear GreenNet friends,*
*December 2017*

If it's nearly the end of the year then it must be time for a GreenNet
newsletter. We'd like to thank you for your support in 2017 and wish you
a very merry festive season. To see when our office is closed for the
holidays, please skip <#opening> to the end of this message.

We have had a splendid 2017 at GreenNet Towers (aka Development House),
though it seems likely to be our last at this address - we'll be moving
to a new space next year along with the Ethical Property Company. We
will let you know when we finally change address.

        2017 highlights

  *

GreenNet launched new websites for Peace Brigades International
    <https://pbi-kenya.org>, Women's Engineering Society
    <http://www.wes.org.uk> and End Water Poverty
<http://endwaterpoverty.org> and have more exciting web projects in
    the proverbial pipeline.

  * We have grown some amazing vegetables in the Development House
garden, alongside Sustain <https://www.sustainweb.org/> and other
    Ethical Property co-tenants.

*
***Weaving Our Own Web*

*Are you a grassroots activist wanting to find our more about online
campaigning tools and privacy? Our friends at Peace News
<https://www.peacenews.info/> are organising a free day school in London
on Saturday 13 January, and GreenNet will be participating. Find out
more and register here
<https://www.peacenews.info/node/8853/weaving-our-own-web>.
*
Our legal challenge to GCHQ hacking continues*

Privacy International are fighting the government's use of 'general
warrants' to hack computers, phones and networks at a potentially vast
scale. Please help them to keep the state out of your webcam!
<http://www.crowdjustice.com/hacking>

*GDPR*

In May the EU General Data Protection Regulation will come into force,
enhancing citizens' rights to data protection. If your organisation or
campaign has a mailing list, or handles personal data in any other way,
you should start thinking about how to ensure that you don't fall foul
of the new rules. We can't help with legal interpretations, but check
out the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office) for guidance
<https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/>,
and give us a shout if you need any help with your mailing list or CRM.
*
Your very own cloud!*

Check this article
<https://www.greennet.org.uk/support/whats-alternative-office365googlesuite-corporate-cloud>
about how to use our amazing Nextcloud as an alternative to corporate
'clouds'. Nextcloud can do more than just help share files and
appointments, and we expect it to sprout even more features in 2018.
*
Moving towards becoming a Co-op*

GreenNet has operated as a collective for as many years as any of us can
remember, but is owned by a charity, GreenNet Educational Trust. So that
we can work better with the co-operative movement, we're working on
transforming our legal basis to be a 'proper' co-operative, with the
support of Hackney Cooperative Developments <http://www.hced.co.uk>.
We'll update you as things progress.

        *Christmas opening hours*

*The GreenNet office will be closed from 5.30pm on Friday 22nd December
2017 and will reopen fully on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.*

As always, we will be monitoring our servers throughout the festive
period. If you have an urgent query during this time, please send an
email to support at gn.apc.org <maito:support at gn.apc.org> or leave a
message on *0330 355 4011*. We'll do our best to respond as soon as we can.

Meanwhile don't forget to switch off your own devices (don't leave them
on standby) and have a lovely break!

With all our best wishes for a peaceful and happy holiday,

Andrew, Cedric, Ed, Howard, Ian, Liz and Marek
