George

Just picking up on my emails. I am taking a break in Melbourne. So a bit
delayed...

I did note your message about the brutal death of your (our) colleague. In
fact it wasn't the first I had heard of it as I am subscribed to a number of
alert lists.

As for our collective lack of response, and your highlighting of same, my
feeling is that when you are the person on the ground at the site of such
atrocities, especially as known to the Media Caucus (since you posted to our
list), as opposed to someone we don't know the orientation of, it's a good
idea to suggest a clear and achievable action - if you think one is
appropriate - that can be taken by individual and organisational members,
and of course to provide the relevant contact details.

As media freedom activists and organisations many of us have participated in
establishing alert lists and associated quality controls to ensure accuracy
and global monitoring. In most cases, the organisations at the heart of
these systems do take responsive action, both immediate and longer term,
when atrocities against freedom of expression occur.

Of course there is variation in the capacity of media freedom organisations,
but I think that by and large Media Caucus members would be working on an
assumption that action is being taken by organisations that we participated
in establishing.

None the less, I can hear your frustration and am very sorry to hear of the
unwarranted death of another journalist.

Regards

Tracey Naughton
