Subject: [Media Caucus] re: Chenevière's query on selection - Tracey's
thoughts
Chenevière
Hello and thanks for checking in. Several people have asked me about the
criteria by which a selection will be made and I have pondered the matter at
length.
Electronic communication is not conducive to a decent discussion, or an
election, so in the end my feeling is that our list is quite short and we
could submit all our nominations - other caucus's are doing the same. This
is why I have asked people who accept their nominations to provide a
motivation that includes:
? Reasons you want to participate,
? The constituency you would represent,
? Your knowledge of the subject,
? The key messages you believe the media caucus would get across as a result
of your participation.
I hope that in this way, the candidates that will best serve the interests
of the media perspective on IG will be obvious. It also looks as though all
the candidates that have been nominated are strong and will serve our
interests, so I see no other way than submitting all.
We will be subjected to some civil society criticism when we submit a gender
imbalanced list that will be seen to be perpetuating the status quo of the
world order, but we will weather that too and hopefully address this issue
in our own contexts.
Though I have some personal (and political) concerns about the perspective
of least developed regions of the world being under represented, and a
belief that these concerns should be addressed at every strategic
opportunity, I have decided to push for that to be addressed in the other
electronic environments I am active in, because at the end of the day the
sphere of Article 19 applications for internet governance must be upheld and
we are the best people for that job. I won't elaborate on this much more,
but I think the WGIG will have to deal with a number of sub-issues and
within these debates, the various stages of national development will emerge
as different perspectives. I also have no doubt that the final selection, at
UN level, will seek to ensure global diversity.
I am also assuming that by being transparent and ensuring that everyone who
has included themselves on this caucus e-list list can see what is going on,
that if there are any alternate ideas, objections, specific support, that
these will be raised and I will moderate as required. I am certainly open to
suggestions.
In general this is a no nonsense caucus that has demonstrated its ability to
take decisions and get on with the work.....
Meanwhile, very best regards,
Tracey
