Preparatory meeting of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

Reporters Without Borders presents its delegation of
cyber-dissidents and bloggers

UN member states will meet in Geneva from 18 to 
25 February to prepare the next World Summit on 
the Information Society (WSIS). Reporters Without 
Borders is concerned that the countries that 
least respect free expression are playing a 
dominant role in the preparation of this 
conference.

The organization has therefore decided to be 
represented at Geneva by a delegation of Chinese, 
Iranian, Tunisian and Maldivian cyber-dissidents 
and bloggers so that they can describe the 
violations of online free expression that take 
place in their countries. "We would like to put a 
face to the repression against Internet users in 
some of the countries that will be parading at 
the WSIS, " the organization said.

The participants at this press conference will be:

- Zouhair Yahyaoui (Tunisia, the country hosting 
the second stage of the WSIS) was imprisoned from 
4 June 2002 to 18 November 2003 for making fun of 
President Ben Ali on his website, Tunezine.com. 
He received the Reporters Without Borders 
Cyber-Freedom Prize in June 2003.
  - Ibrahim Lutfy (Maldives) was arrested in 
January 2002 for helping to produce Sandhaanu, an 
electronic newsletter about President Gayoom's 
human rights violations. He escaped from prison 
in May 2003 and has since lived in Switzerland, 
where he has been granted political asylum.
- Cai Chongguo (China), a philosophy professor 
and political dissident, had to flee his country 
after the Tiananmen Square massacres. He has been 
given asylum in France, where he is studying the 
system of online censorship that has been 
introduced in China.
- Jay Bakht (Iran) is a founding member of 
Penlog, a group of Iranian bloggers. He lives in 
Britain, where he fights for the release of 
imprisoned bloggers and campaigns against the 
Iranian government's Internet filtering policies.
- Julien Pain is the Internet desk officer at Reporters Without Borders.
- George Gordon-Lennox is the Secretary general 
of Reporters Without Borders' Swiss section and 
the official representative of the organization 
at the UN.

The press conference will be held in an Internet 
café so the cyber-dissidents can support their 
presentations with concrete examples of 
censorship.

Les Etats membres de l'ONU vont se réunir à 
Genève, du 18 au 25 février 2005, pour préparer 
le prochain Sommet mondial sur la société de 
l'information (SMSI). Reporters sans frontières 
s'inquiète du rôle prépondérant joué, dans la 
préparation  de cette conférence, par les Etats 
les moins respectueux de la liberté d'expression.

L'organisation a donc choisi d'être représentée à 
Genève par une délégation de cyberdissidents et 
webloggers - chinois, iranien, tunisien, 
maldivien - afin qu'ils témoignent des atteintes 
à la liberté d'expression sur Internet dans leur 
pays. "Nous souhaitons donner un visage à la 
répression  dont sont victimes les internautes 
dans certains des pays qui vont parader au SMSI", 
a déclaré l'organisation.

Interviendront lors de cette conférence de presse :

- Zouhair Yahyaoui (Tunisie, pays hôte de la 
seconde phase du SMSI) a été emprisonné, du
4 juin 2002 au 18 novembre 2003, pour avoir 
brocardé le président Ben Ali sur son site 
Internet, Tunezine.com. Il a reçu en juin 2003 le 
prix Cyberliberté décerné par Reporters sans 
frontières.
  - Ibrahim Lutfy (Maldives) a été arrêté en 
janvier 2002 pour avoir collaboré à Sandhaanu, un 
bulletin d'information diffusé par e-mail qui 
dénonçait les atteintes aux droits de l'homme 
commises par le président Gayoom. Il s'est évadé 
de prison en mai 2003 et vit depuis en Suisse, où 
il a obtenu le statut de réfugié politique.
- Cai Chongguo (Chine), professeur de philosophie 
et dissident politique, a dû fuir son pays suite 
aux massacres de la place Tiananmen. Réfugié en 
France, il étudie les systèmes de censures du Net 
mis en place par Pékin.
- Jay Bakht (Iran) est membre fondateur de 
Penlog, une association de webloggers iraniens. 
Il vit au Royaume-Uni, où il se bat pour la 
libération des webloggers emprisonnés et dénonce 
la politique de filtrage du Net mise en place par 
les autorités.
- Julien Pain est responsable du Bureau Internet 
et libertés de Reporters sans frontières (Paris).
- George Gordon-Lennox est le secrétaire général 
de la section suisse de Reporters sans frontières 
et son représentant auprès des organisations 
internationales à Genève.

La conférence de presse se tiendra dans un 
cybercafé afin que les cyberdissidents puissent 
agrémenter leur présentation d'exemples concrets 
de censure.
