<font size=3>AHM Bazlur Rahman-S21BR, Chief Executive Officer of
Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has been
selected for the second term covering 2008-2010 as a member of the
Strategy Council of UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID)
in the quota for civil society. <br><br>
Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of United Nations
Mr. Zukang Sha approve the new membership on 09 April 2008. The UN
Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID), a global alliance
initiated by the United Nations, of the Secretary-General of UN,
was launched in 2006 after comprehensive worldwide consultations with
governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical and
Internet communities and academia. <br><br>
The high-level <a href="http://www.un-gaid.org/en/council"><b>Strategy
Council</a> </b>provides overall strategic guidance and priority setting.
The 65-members UN GAID Strategy Council representing from different
countries in the world is composed of 32 Government representatives, 11
private initiators, 12 civil society representatives and 10 delegates
from UN and its wing agencies including top-level policy makers,
practitioners, experts and thinkers with balanced representation from all
groups. The Council ensures engagement of high-level expertise and
leadership, and facilitates outreach. The basic requirement for the
members of this policy-setting group is commitment, experience and vision
in ICT for development and traditional development fields. <br><br>
UN GAID emphasized the importance of ICT in achieving the internationally
agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs), and a need for a truly global forum that would comprehensively
address cross-cutting issues related to ICT in development.<br><br>
He is due to attend the meeting of GAID to be held on 18-20 May in 2008
in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia under the initiative of United Nations
Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA-GAID). It will follow
up on the “Connect Africa Summit” by focusing on access and connectivity
in the least developed countries and small island developing states in
the Asia-Pacific region, and on innovative financing mechanisms for ICT
for development. <br><br>
Notably, AHM Bazlur Rahman-S21BR has been working as a member of
Bangladesh Working Group on World Summit on the Information Society
(WSIS) headed by Government of Bangladesh and member- committee of draft
policy on Community Radio of Ministry of Information, People's
Republic of Bangladesh. <br><br>
Meanwhile, Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) is
a national networking body working for building a democratic society
based on the principles of free flow of information, equitable and
affordable access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for
remote and marginalized population with the support of the
CORDAID.<br><br>
