Dear all,
a brief report on what we did in Geneva:
1. Coalition working meeting
The meeting on Sunday was attended by about 15 persons from governments,
civil society, the private sector, and academia. We had intense
discussions on the two substantive issues "privacy and identity" and
"privacy and development", as well as on our working methods and next
steps. Unfortunately, the time was too short to also get into the third
issue area we have on our working plan (privacy and freedom of expression).
Mark Lizar was kind enough to take notes and will send them out when they
are edited.
2. Report to the IGF consultations (progress report)
A few of us met again on Monday at the UN to prepare written input for the
IGF consultations on Tuesday. We agreed that we need more time and
discussion before we can present something substantial, so we only
prepared a formal report on our work so far. We called it "second progress
report", as the first in a way was the report from the two workshops at
the IGF in Athens.
The progress report was presented to the IGF consultations (together with
the FAQ and a list of our participants' affiliations), and was also made
available by the IGF secretariat in printed form. The prints were quite
popular, and quickly all of the copies were taken. The final version (rev.
1) of the progress report can be found here:

The transcript of my oral presentation is available at

- just search for "bendrath".
3. Issue papers
I would like to thank Cristos Velasco and Christian Möller, who had
volunteered to write short draft papers on "privacy and development" and
"privacy and freedom of expression" before the meeting in Geneva, which I
attach here. We now will have to continue the discussion on this list and
turn them into the issue papers we announced, as well to start working on
an issue paper on idendity(any volunteers for a first draft?). This will
probably need some more homogenous format and very concise theses and
questions / issues. I am already looking forward to this!
4. Next meetings
We agreed that we need more face-to-face meetings. Tentative dates and
events for this could be:
- 1 to 4 May 2007: Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference 2007, Montreal
- 15 to 25 May 2007: Cluster of WSIS-related events, Geneva
- June / July 2007 (date tbd): coalition working meeting in Paris
(invitation by the French government)
- 25 to 28 September 2007: 29th International Conference of Data
Protection and Privacy Commissioners, Montreal
- other ideas?
5. Online collaboration
We need a proper website and some kind of document server in the mid term,
and we also might want to try real-time communications like
teleconferences and chat sessions. In Geneva, there was an announcement by
Kieren McCarthy on the formation of a new "dynamic coalition on online
collaboration", which will help with providing tools and online spaces for
this. Any other contributions from all of you are of course as welcome!
6. Outreach
We have a growing, but still a bit an unbalanced membership - especially
government delegates are a clear minority so far. If we want to have a
serious impact in the UN environment, we will need to get more of them on
board. Please, all: Approach any open-minded government officials in this
field that you know and encourage them to join.
7. Thanks
... to those who were there for an indeed dynamic meeting in Geneva.
It was very inspiring, and it also was great fun!
All the best,
Ralf
