Thank you for coming to the day. I am very pleased that we got such a good
response and great contributions from everyone. We have a wide range of
experience and extensive skills to tackle the most difficult problems facing
the world.
We discussed how people could work for, with and through the Institute - we
wish to be open to any kind of collaboration and partnership. We also
touched on the concept of "sustainable systems" and what on earth we mean by
it. However, this first get together was an opportunity for people to meet
up and get a feel for what the Institute could become.
In summary the actions that came from the day are split into those for the
'core' team and those for everyone:
Core
* Produce a clearer plan for the Institute than that presented, and
show how it might develop. Lessen the emphasis on a physical realisation and
concentrate efforts on people and ideas. (We are producing a small pamphlet
to describe the Institute and its objectives. We will circulate this for
comment)
* Write up terms of reference for how people will engage with the
Institute.
* Define the 'Challenge Paper' concept properly.
* Communicate to the group about programmes of work and opportunities
like the World Future Council, the Schumacher Circle project, West of
England cluster concept and other potential projects like country reports.
* Develop a 'map' what is happening in sustainability and systems.
* Work on getting 'clients' together in some kind of forum.
* Pursue grants and other sources of funding.
All of us
* Submit a CV and any notes or thoughts from the day.
* Send in samples of good work that can be advertised through the
Institute website.
* Give examples of research that you would like to be done.
* Attend future forums.
* Help develop research methodologies, practices, tools and
techniques.
* Contribute ideas for 'projects' - especially so that we can
co-operate with universities and colleges to engage students in our work.
* Keep an eye out for any grants / funding sources etc. that might be
relevant for the Institute.

As you can see the email list server is now available and you can send a
message to the whole group by using the address
siss-l at schumacherinstitute.org.uk. Usual protocol applies: only messages to
the whole group; reply to the sender unless relevant to the whole group; no
large attachments.
We will send around details of other people who could not make the day and
of course add them to the email list.
Could you let us know if you are not a member of the Schumacher Society so
that we can send you a copy of the newsletter?
Again thank you for coming and for your support.
Best wishes
Ian
