[Telecentres] urgent: choosing speakers for the Tunis summit

I would be more than happy to pitch in as I am compiling the book based on
my personal visit to 150 villages across India and more than 80
kiosks/telecenters - with focus from governance, education, entrepreneurship
and grassroots development - across 14 states and I can share the same.

Brief Bio:

Osama Manzar is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, editor, columnist, and new
media specialist who is spearheading the mission to overcome the information
barrier between India's rural and social sector, and the so-called developed
society through Digital Empowerment Foundation - www.defindia.org - the
not-for-profit organisation founded to accomplish the mission.

He has authored two books: "e-Content: Voices from the Ground
(www.econtentworldwide.org)" released in World Summit on the Information
Society, December 2003 in Geneva, and "The Internet Economy of India"
released in 2001 in New Delhi.

He was awarded a joint Chevening/Young Indian IT Professional Programme 2002
Scholarship by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to study Advanced IT
Management Programme at Manchester Business School, University of Manchester
from 2001-2002.

Manzar is e-Content Expert for India for World Summit Award (WSA) -
www.wsis-award.org; Grand Jury Member and also Board of Directors

He is Vice Chairman, cofounder and steering committee member of GABDD
(Global Alliance for Bridging Digital Divide) - www.gabdd.org - based in
Hong Kong.

He has launched India's first ever award for choosing the best e-content
practices in India. The Manthan Award could be seen at

Philips Design (http://www.design.philips.com) for its Human Future project
chose him, among 25 internationally renowned experts, to interview to get
ideas "to develop human products driven by technology and life style of the
future".

He is widely quoted in media on new media, digital divide issues, and so on.
He is a founder of ICT solutions company called 4Cplus [www.4Cplus.com],
based in New Delhi.

Besides editing Inomy.com (www.inomy.com), he passionately speaks on the
topics related ICT for Development, India's social sector, and Information
Economy in general.

He is also an advisor to ICT for Development for Development Gateway
Foundation, www.developmentgateway.org, a World Bank funded project. 

He is member of Association of British Scholars - www.abs-india.org.

He is working on his next two books:

invited to recommend speakers for the summit, following the guidelines
below. Since only a minority of telecentres caucus members are in Geneva
right now, it makes the most sense for us to discuss this online.

Please take a look at the guidelines, then feel free to suggest any names to
the list for public discussion. Please note we must submit names no later
than noon geneva time on Wednesday, so that basically means we must come up
with recommendations by the end of the day on Tuesday. -andy

Civil Society Speakers - Tunis Summit

The Civil Society Bureau has been asked by the WSIS Executive Secretariat to
supply the names of nominated civil society speakers (and an alternate for
each) for the following sessions, by the end of PrepCom 3. Mr. Utsumi,
Secretary General of the ITU, will take the final decision on these
speakers. Civil society groupings (families, caucuses or working groups, as
listed below at the end of this document) are kindly requested to consider
their nominations and submit them before 12 noon on Wednesday 28th September
2005.

1 speaker for the Opening Session

1 speaker at the first Plenary (general debate)

1 (or 2) speakers at the second Plenary (dependent on Heads of State)
(general debate)

1 (or 2) speakers at the third Plenary (dependent on Heads of State)
(general debate)

4 speakers for the fourth plenary (general debate)

2 speakers for the fifth plenary (general debate)

2 speakers for the sixth plenary (general debate)

4 speakers for the seventh plenary (general debate)

1 speaker for the High Level Panel (ICT for Development)

2 speakers for each of 2 Round Tables (From Commitment to Action: 
Implementation after Tunis)

There will be a further opportunity for reporting of multi-stakeholder
events but the CSB is seeking further clarification on these.

The guidelines developed by the CSB, for each of the sessions are:

Opening Session Speaker:

A person who has:

. Been actively involved in WSIS

. Is a good public speaker and will convey a clear image through the media

This speaker should deliver a text that is:

. An advocacy statement on key WSIS issues from the civil society
perspective

. That is drafted and agreed to on the Plenary list
