    Hi Everyone
It does seem like we needed a long time to digest WSIS. I have already been disseminating information about it . Have been asked to present workshops and papers. I am trying my best to meet all deadlines.

Working with the Youth on service projects at a monastery over the Christmas period

I am not reading as much these days because my New year Resolution is to FINISH one book...not read it but to finish writing it. This is on Youth and issues of building the future. Meeting with various youth groups and think tank type of individuals to gain further perspectives.

In line with our technology dimension , I am heavily involved with a women's business organization in getting them new technology which will enable better organizational management and also enable better global web interaction. Some of my experiences in Tunisia is comming in handy .

On a lighter note ..but equally important to me, particularly along the idea of ...a picture painting a thousand words...I was asked to participate in an International Modelling Event /Fashion Show...So I was able to benchmark the pride of the Hindustan Heritage and Culture in a vibrant electric blue Saree ...really enjoyed that! Well we always said gender is an issue !!!!

still taking on City Hall as far as the Values and Ethics are concerned.

  Buisness is a challenge
  Family is awsome!

I would like to hear more from all of you . I really enjoyed all of u and especially those of you with whom I was able to enjoy more time.

Are we going to participate in Athens in May. I am ready able and willing.

Happy new Year to you all

  love and regards to all

As it seems that everybody needed some time to digest the WSIS, I would like to share some at least easy accessible ‘brainfood’ with the hope to stimulate some communication and ultimately re-start collaboration.

And lastly, and to come back to our discourse, I would like to point your attention to Hans Küng,
The question of a Global Ethic stems from Professor Hans Küng's book "Global Responsibility" (1990), which was first published in English in 1991. This book developed programmatically the idea that the religions of the world can make a contribution to the peace of humankind only if they reflect on those elements of an ethic which they already have in common: on a fundamental consensus on binding values, irrevocable standards and personal attitudes.
He has created an organisation http://www.weltethos.org/dat_eng/index_e.htm which in turn has participated in the creation of the Declaration towards a global ethic (parliament of the world’s religions, 1993, http://www.weltethos.org/dat_eng/pdf_eng/dekl_eng.pdf). My question to you is – has anything changed in the information society so the declaration needs updating or some addition? And in general, what is your opinion on the global ethics declaration?

  Warm regards
  Max

  Dear Max,

Many thanks; very interesting! And I like many of your comments and critiques.

Defining some of the values most applicable to the infosoc would seem a good step forward; coupled perhaps with examples/illustrations of good practice of them.

For the moment, at least, I can't offer more than some of the ideas from Tunis but let's see how things look in the new year...

best
Chris

  Hi all

I have finished ‘Hacker Ethics’ (by Linus Torval – the programmer behind linux, Himanen – a finish sociologist, and Manuel Castells – the scientific leader of my programme). The book recognises that in the (rich) information societies ‘new ethical motivations/practices’ are at work. There are some good points made, there are some points I had to critique, and overall the book made me think quite a bit and start formulate some ideas in what direction a discourse on post-geographical (cosmopolitan) ethics & values could take. (Please see attached rtf)

I was thinking whether I should send it in this draft and unpolished format and I decided to do so as it is enough to trigger some though. I share these initial personal thoughts on values and ethics in the information society, as I would like to ask each participant to either share your/your organisations perspective in an independent document or as critique/comment/amendment of the document you find attached.

If, as we suggested in our contribution to the civil society statement, we stand in for "The ethical dimensions are overarching and imperative and not value-added dimensions" we have to define what the ethical dimension is? what are the ethics and values we want to see embraced in the information society? And how they stand in relation to the global human rights policy regime. Put differently let us define our stake/objective/perspective as values and ethics caucus. What is it we stand for?

Please contribute your perspective – I volunteer to try to distil ‘our language’ and put it up on the wiki.

Also if people feel uncomfortable using the wiki they can send member profiles to the list and I will put them up on the wiki.

  Greetings
  Max

PS; the other paper promotes a very potent concept of the internet as noosphere (as noetic hyper entity) and even though I am a bit worried to produce an ethical overload ;-) I send it as I just ran into it again – if there is rough consensus I would post this paper on the wiki in a resources section
