racism, and
share concrete strategies for change.

Patient-Controlled Alternatives to the Mental Health System, and
co-founder of the
National Empowerment Center www.power2u.org. Jennifer Chambers is also a
psych
survivor, and currently the Empowerment Facilitator for the Centre For
Addiction and
Mental Health.

Fraser River Journey for Justice
In September 2000, Aboriginal women from across British Colombia rafted
from Prince
George to Vancouver, stopping in nine Aboriginal communities on the
river to talk about
violence against women. Helen Haig-Brown, a Chilcotin youth,
co-ordinated the journey
together with Audrey Huntley of mixed Ojibway and German ancestry. They
talk about the
violence experienced by Aboriginal women in their communities and what
can be done to
stop it.

Fighting the Female Refuges Act
An interview with Velma Demerson, who was imprisoned under the Female
Refuges Act for
eloping with her Chinese-Canadian husband. Under this Act, in effect in
Ontario from the
1890's to the 1960's, parents could have young women imprisoned for
being "incorrigable
or irrational". Velma is currently involved in a Charter Challenge to
have this law, which
was repealed in the 1960's, declared unconstitutional.

stereotypes and other topics relevant to our lives as empowered sex
professionals.
