MAD IN WALES FILM SCREENING

Mad in Wales! A film exploring the relationship between psychosis and
spirituality will be screened in Cardiff in July. The documentary highlights
alternatives to psychiatric treatment of mental health.

Produced by award winning media charity Undercurrents and directed by

Melissa Gunasena, Evolving Minds will be shown as part of the Black

Welsh film festival.

Melissa said of her film ŒThroughout history humans have always sought to
explore, alter and make sense of reality. I decided to make Evolving Minds
following my own experiences as an involuntary psychiatric patient. After
suffering the trauma of inhumane treatment whilst in hospital and the
unwelcome effects of strong medication, I firmly believe that psychiatric
treatment does not solve the problem, it merely suppresses and postpones
it.²

Evolving Minds broadens the cultural barriers to reveal that schizophrenia,
mania and psychosis have been accepted by many cultures and traditions as
gateways to the spirit world. People with these experiences have been valued
as contributing positively to the society's well being.

Evolving Minds also explains how chemical imbalances in the brain can be
successfully readjusted by eating a combination of everyday foods.

Director, Melissa Gunasena has just returned from a three-month tour of Sri
Lanka. Her Art2Art therapy workshops have been helping children and adults
overcome the trauma of the Boxing Day Tsunami.

209RADIO SHORTLISTED FOR THE NEW STATESMAN NEW MEDIA AWARDS 2005

209radio has been shortlisted for the New Statesman New Media Awards 2005
for Community and Information London, 5th July 2005

The New Statesman, Britain¹s leading political magazine, in association with
Atos Origin, the leading IT services company, announces the short list for
their New Media Awards in the category of Community and Information. This
award will go to the individual or organisation that best uses new media
technology to provide an alternative, informative voice enhancing democratic
debate.

The key themes of this year¹s awards are "ingenuity, modernisation and
accessibility". They intend to award those who have achieved something of
benefit to others, whether in their community or in society at large. Since
1998, these awards have promoted projects that embrace new technology, fresh
thinking and creative management in the UK.

³Society has always been promised a great deal by the digital revolution,²
says John Kampfner, editor of the New Statesman. ³The 2005 New Media Awards
will highlight the projects that have really delivered on that promise.²

³This is a bit of a shock and a great honour, especially as 209radio is
still waiting for the decision on our FM licence application! It shows how
ordinary people can use basic technology to make a real difference. It also
shows how Community Media, as the new third tier in UK broadcasting, is
already making waves.²
