hello, 

i'm sending this email to some groups and individuals who have stated an
interest in getting involved in radio coverage of the g8 demonstrations
this year. i'll give you some background, links, etc in this email and
places to go to get further involved. this is also a bit of a summary to
build on one written by zcat (see link below)

the g8 are meeting in scotland from july 6-8. there will be big
protests, essentially starting on the 1st july (although there will be
others before) and going on for the period of the summit. 

there are three main coalitions who will be protesting the summit: 

 - make poverty history (mph) - ngos and trade unions, etc
 - dissent - non-hierarchical, anti-capitalist network in europe
 - g8-alternatives - local scottish groups and antiwar groups, eg.
campaign for nuclear disarmament (cnd) 

[nb - that is very rough categorisations!] 

the london collective of uk-imc organised a media convergence for lots
of different alternative media groups a few weeks ago. at this, it was
decided that radio would be done separately from the main imc stuff,
although of course incorporating imc into the coalition - i guess, a bit
similar to cmrn (i wasn't at the convergence, and don't really know that
much about cmrn either).

the current plan is to have one studio broadcasting out of the imc
centre in edinburgh. there may well be another studio in edinburgh also
 - this is currently be investigated (the first place was too expensive
and not so suitable). the space in the imc building is actually not
confirmed yet as far as i can make out, but we should definitely have it
too. there is broadband internet there which i read is "2mbps up and
512kbps down" although i think that might be the other way around. there
will also, we hope, be a back-up/second connection. 

there are also gonna be mobile, roving media stations which will be both
internet connected and internet isolated (i.e. not connected). the
latter will have relays going back to the main imc centre so that stuff
is published/broadcast within a reasonable time.

disclaimer: these are my ideas and i know not very much about
radio/internet streaming, etc! so they may be totally stupid, or
replicating what other people have stated, or conflicting or whatever.
but they are just ideas, so please feel free to use them as you see fit :-) 

ok, basically to have two streams:
 - one, extremely current/breaking news, as it comes in etc. this would
be broadcast direct from the studio in scotland and be on air as long as
that studio has got people working at it (probably not 24 hour)
 - two, slightly more in depth news and documentary stuff about the issues. 

i'd guess that stream one would come out of the studio and then be
mirrored from other places on the internet. this might be a point for
overseas radio-tech-bods to help with. 

stream two, meanwhile, could actually be produced by people who are
remote from the "action." this could be made up of reports taken from
stream one, reports from other (solidarity) actions around the world (if
there are any!), discussion of the issues, news collated from other
sources - eg imc newswires, press releases from protest groups involved,
etc. this stream could also be done on a rotating basis, similar to the
critical mass radio network broadcasts. 

i don't know what the feeling of other people is about this (as i say, i
have no experience in this sort of thing! also, it was mentioned at the
irc meeting last week, but there were other more important issues to
discuss at that time). i'd really welcome feedback :-)

there's some really exciting work in developing software to facilitate
easy id-tagging of mp3s prior to upload. see

the plan at the moment seems to be to only use linux workstations
equipped with audacity. there is a request for some equipment -

nothing is certain yet. personally, i don't actually know what our
requirements should be.
