Teen radio station to go on air

A radio station for youngsters in the Hillfields area
of Coventry is set to take to the airwaves.Hillz FM,
aimed at 13 to 19-year-olds, is to go live for four
weeks from next month.It will broadcast music,
including local talent, news, views and chat shows at
102.6FM, and will also be on the internet.If
successful, organisers will apply for a permanent
licence later in the year.Dan Finnan, youth
development worker, said about 40 young people in the
area were involved in the project.Sidney Stringer
School in Cox Street, Hillfields, and Barrs Hill
School in Radford Road have lent their support.Through
funding from Children In Need, the Neighbourhood
Support Fund, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and other
bodies, they have been through more than six months of
training with Dan, putting together their own shows
and organising their own jingles.Dan said: "Hillz FM
will mainly be music-based but the emphasis is very
much on the community and we are also hoping to link
up to the International Children's Games."Music-wise
it will generally be hiphop, garage, dance and
R&B."The station will be great because it will play
the best in specialist music and it will bring the
community together."Bill Hall, manager of community
group Watch (Working Actively To Change Hillfields),
said: "Hillz FM will give voice to all the communities
of Hillfields."The young people in the area have
worked hard on this and we see it as an exciting
project which will benefit the Hillfields
community."Hillz FM goes on air at 9am on June 6.
