City radio station set to return

Preston's community radio station is returning for its
third stint this Sunday (November 5)
The station has organsied the I Care event on
Preston's Flag Market on Saturday, November 11, from
10am.

I Care invites members of the public to show the city
what matters to them and make a banner reflecting
something they care about.

Richard Lace, project manager, said: "The event
crystallises what Preston FM is all about. Our
presenters are volunteers –using community radio to
tell the city what they care about."

The broadcast will feature a range of musical styles
and local bands, as well as programmes on the arts,
sport and community issues alongside interviews with
local celebrities.

The project is led by the Preston Community Arts
Project and has been funded for two years by the
European Regional Development Fund, the AvenCentral
Partnership and Preston City Council through its
E-city project.

Station goes live with bang
By Chris Gee

The city's very own community radio station is back
with a bang as Preston FM rockets to the airwaves with
a bonfire night launch.
>From Sunday November 5, around 200 local volunteers
will present a month-long broadcast from studios on
Church Street.
Station bosses hope to feature a wide range of musical
styles and local bands, as well as programmes on the
arts, sport and community issues alongside interviews
with local celebrities.
There will be a regular programme aimed at local
businesses, as well as programmes to help people
looking for work, and a daily Preston Focus show
including interviews with people from all over the
city.
The diversity of the station's schedule will be
demonstrated in a special event, called I Care, to be
held on the Flag market on Saturday, November 11.
Preston FM presenters will be encouraging everyone to
make a banner reflecting something they care about,
from dog mess and car parking to global poverty and
nuclear energy. Organisers hope that a forest of
banners will grow up during the day, reflecting the
huge range of things that Prestonians are passionate
about, with recordings made on the day being turned
into a programme for Preston FM.
Station manager Richard Lace said: "The I Care event
really crystallises what Preston FM is all about.
"Our presenters are all volunteers, using community
radio to tell the city what they care about.
"Everyone cares about something and, as well as
helping us create a really interesting programme for
the station, I hope that some of the people taking
part will be inspired to volunteer for Preston FM in
the future."
Other regular shows will be City Soap, a soap opera
written by and starring local people, and Your
Preston, a daily news programme keeping residents in
touch with the latest goings on in the city.
The station will broadcast on 87.9FM, and via the
internet at www.preston.fm, where full programme
schedules are available.

Community radio makes its official switch to FM

A NEW community radio station will broadcast its first
live show to the Tidworth area at the start of next
month.
Castledown Radio, the area's first official community
radio station, will broadcast its first show on 104.7
FM at midday on Saturday, November 4.
The station, which is run by Tidworth Development
Trust, will broadcast to Tidworth, Perham Down,
Ludgershall, the Collingbournes, Everleigh, the
Chutes, Shipton Bellinger and Bulford Camp.
It has already been a success via the internet, but
launching with FM broadcasting will help to strengthen
the radio service for the community.
Baz Reilly, who is in charge of Castledown Radio,
said: "We are all very excited about the launch.
"Broadcasting on FM is what we've been working towards
for some time.
"Most of all I am pleased for our volunteers, without
whom we could not operate.
"They have worked extremely hard to provide the
internet service over the past 18 months, and I know
they are as thrilled as I am that we will be
broadcasting on FM."
The station is inviting members of the public to
attend the launch party, which will include food and
drink, as well as live music from Less is More and Get
This.
The event is due to start at 10.30am and the official
switch over to FM will take place at midday.
