i called them chairs when i wrote the charter. and that is still the
current wording.

one of the problems we have/had in the IGC is that the role of the
coordinator was never clear and never really empowered by the group.
we had the perpetual undercurrent discussion of weak or strong. in
writing the charter i was looking for a middle path where the chairs
should feel empowered to carry the decisions of the WG without
necessarily coming back to the group every time they wanted to state
an opinion. they are also in the position to call for votes when the
discussion comes to a stand still. and have authority over
netiquette. so i think they are somewhat more then coordinators.

this was part of the idea in terms of having them both elected and
having a procedure for dumping them if they spoke in a way the
membership found objectionable.

of course this is only my original conception and the charter says
what it says as understood by us all collectively. and we can change
it is that is the thing we want to do.
